Blue-green algae occurs naturally in water, but under certain weather and environmental conditions it can grow rapidly, forming what is known as a bloom. In some circumstances, these blooms can produce toxins that may pose a risk to people, pets, and livestock.

Algal scums that collect on the surface of the water present the greatest risk, as toxins can become concentrated within them. These scums may resemble turquoise paint, grass clippings or floating mats and are often found along the water's edge. Their size and location can change depending on wind, weather and water movement.

To help keep yourself and others safe, please avoid contact with any algal scums or water that appears bright green or unusually discoloured.

Please be aware that contact with affected water may cause skin rashes or eye irritation. If contaminated water is swallowed, symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and muscle or joint pain.

If you, your pet, or livestock come into contact with affected water, wash any exposed skin thoroughly with clean water as soon as possible and remove any contaminated clothing. It is particularly important to wash before eating or drinking. If symptoms develop, seek appropriate medical or veterinary advice.

Our Environmental Team is aware of the situation and is monitoring the area closely. They are providing guidance to our operational teams and taking the appropriate precautions.
