Waterway Notices / Cossington Lock 48

Following the start of works at Cossington Lock, our teams have encountered several unexpected challenges that have affected progress on site. Difficulties mobilising the works, including access constraints and the need to travel from an alternative base, have reduced the time available for productive work on site.

We are working hard to recover lost time wherever possible. However, despite these efforts, the original programme can no longer be achieved.

As a result, the closure will need to be extended by approximately two weeks. We are currently aiming to reopen the navigation on Friday 6 November 2026.

We're carrying out essential improvements at Cossington Lock 48, including the replacement of the top and bottom lock gates. To complete this work safely, a stoppage will be in place from 7th September to 23rd October 2026. Previous stoppages on the River Soar have been significantly affected by flooding, leading to unavoidable delays. These dates have been carefully selected to minimise the risk of further disruption from adverse weather and to help ensure the works can be completed efficiently. Looking ahead, we're committed to providing longer advance notice for river stoppages, especially during the spring and summer months. As we continue to share our multi‑year programme, customers will receive greater forward visibility to help with planning and navigation.
