Please be advised navigation is restricted at Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal due to a fault with one of the lock gate gears.
Navigation will remain open for narrow boats only using the towpath side gate only.
Whilst our local team is currently planning of method of repair, navigation will remain, however should you notice any further changes please contact our Customer Support Team.
An update will be provided Tuesday 18 February.
Updates
The repair to the lock gate gears at Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, has been a successful and is now back open to wide beam boats.
4/10/2025Due to the recent strain the reactive team have experienced with emergency works across the North West, the restriction remains at Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal due to a fault with one of the lock gate gears. Navigation will remain open for narrow boats only using the towpath side gate only. The team are aiming to have the repairs completed by Friday 11 April.
A further update will be on Friday 11 April.
4/8/2025Following further investigations by our team, we have identified an issue with the metal brackets on the lock gate, which require a specialist team for the repair. We apologise for the delay.
Our teams are currently handling multiple emergency repairs across the North West, which has unfortunately impacted the timeline for this work.
Navigation remains restricted for wide beams, but narrowboats can continue to pass through using the towpath-side gate.
We will provide a further update by Tuesday 8 April.
4/1/2025Our team has been delayed carrying out further investigations to the cill and plan to attend site to investigate further in the next few days.

3/25/2025Our engineering team are continuing to carry out further investigations to the cill which is still being identified as faulty.

3/21/2025Our engineering team have successfully repaired the lock gate gears, however, the team are carrying out further investigation to the cill which was identified as being faulty during the repair.

3/18/2025After further investigations it has been identified that there is a mechanism fault to the lock gate gear which our engineering team need to investigate further.

Our local contractors have scheduled a further site visit this week to investigate the cause of the fault to the lock gate.
Navigation will remain open for narrow boats using the towpath side gate only.
