Description
Lock 11 West has suffered some structural damage to the offside banking that neighbours the lock chamber. The damage has been caused by the severe weather.
The structural failure means the lock is inoperable and must be closed for the safety of the canal visitors and boaters.
Canal and River Trust are currently waiting for the damage to be assessed by the relevant departments.
Once assessments have been made, an update will be posted
Updates
Our teams are progressing well into the access works that will help us get everything ready for the main repairs.
Getting access to the site hasn't been easy – there's a lot to do on both sides of the canal and the River Tame to make sure our contractors can safely reach the embankment.
We've completed the early environmental and ecological checks, and our design team is now putting the finishing touches on the detailed plans. These will guide the permanent repair work, which will begin once the site is fully set up.
We've also started clearing debris and installing access routes. As work continues, you might notice some temporary footpath diversions – we'll make sure these are clearly signposted and cause as little disruption as possible.
Our current plan will aim to re-open navigation by 31st July 2025, although that could change a little as things develop due to complexity of the repairs.
Our next update will be on or before the 9th May.
4/4/2025Our teams are now in the final design stages for the repair to embankment and damaged lock, the next steps include reviewing survey data to allow the final designs to go into works on site.
We have successfully carried out the initial environmental & ecological assessments. Next week we will start with access installation and debris removal to allow our contractors to begin the repair works.
These works are complex and will require time to develop and deliver, updates will be provided at the start of each month, next being the Friday 4th April.
3/3/2025Our engineering, design and environment teams have completed initial site inspections at Lock 11 West on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and are now preparing design options to address the landslips. The location between the canal and river presents access challenges for the required work, and we're actively working with our framework contractor and adjacent landowners to investigate suitable access arrangements.
These works are complex and will require time to develop and deliver, updates will be provided at the start of each month, next being the 3rd of March
2/3/2025Please be advised that the navigation and towpath remains closed between locks 10 and 12 west on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, for the safety of all our boating and towpath customers, this is due to a structural failure of the locks side supporting embankment at lock 11 following the recent severe weather.
Our engineers and design team are currently carrying out inspections to understand the extent of the damage and to prepare a suitable design for reinstatement works.
These works are complex and will require time to develop and deliver, updates will be provided at the start of each month, next being the 3rd of February
