Description
Despite the short period of rain and the initial wet start to the summer, we are struggling to maintain water levels across London's canals, and we need to commence some restrictions to conserve water. We have enjoyed seeing many boats out on the London waterways however with the recent period of very warm weather and high usage coupled with at times paddles accidentally being left open, the Trust is having to introduce temporary overnight restrictions at Hampstead Road Lock on the Regent's Canal and on the Hanwell Lock Flight on the Grand Union Canal.
For the above reasons the two-kilometre Hertford Union Canal will be temporarily closed to navigation from Wednesday 7th August. Boaters requiring passage from the Regent's Canal to the Lee Navigation are requested to take the alternative, longer route, via Limehouse Basin and the Limehouse Cut.
Updates
The Hertford Union Canal is now open for navigation.
9/29/2024Please disregard the previous update mentioning the Wendover arm as this was posted in error.
The restriction remains as below.
The two-kilometre Hertford Union Canal will be temporarily closed to navigation from Wednesday 7th August. Boaters requiring passage from the Regent's Canal to the Lee Navigation are requested to take the alternative, longer route, via Limehouse Basin and the Limehouse Cut.
9/10/2024A 0.5km section of the Wendover Arm has been closed to alleviate continual water losses on the network and to support a dewatered investigation of canal.
The extent of the affected area is from the winding hole to the former stop lock near Tringford Pump House. This means there is a restriction on the craft length that can enter and turn as the winding hole is closed.
Any craft longer than 40ft can not navigate the arm.
Craft equal to 40ft or smaller can use the opening at the Tring Feeder for turning. We anticipate this restriction shall continue through the winter stoppage season and we apologise for any inconvenience.
