Description
Please be advised that the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is closed from Lock 16E to Lock 1E due to low water levels caused by a leak at the Aqueduct at Lock 12E.
Previous temporary fixes have failed, and the installed pump has not supplied enough water to keep the navigation open.
Engineers have assessed the site today to determine the necessary emergency repairs. We are actively working to resolve this issue and will provide an update by 4 PM on Friday.
Updates
We are pleased to inform you that the grouting works have been completed, the pounds are refilled, and navigation is now open.
Please proceed with caution near lock 12, as ongoing bank work will be taking place. Follow any instructions provided by the site staff.
Additionally, please note that lock 1e still requires booking 48 hours in advance, with passage available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Welcome :: Canal & River Trust Licensing (canalrivertrust.org.uk)
9/12/2024Water levels at Lock 12e have recovered well. Initial signs suggest the grouting work has been successful, though we will continue to monitor the situation daily throughout the week.
The pounds are gradually filling, and we expect them to recover up to Lock 1e hopefully by the end of the week.
An update will be provided by 4 p.m. on Friday, the 13th.
9/9/2024The contractor has grouted to stem the leak at lock 12e. Our team are now attempting the re-fill the canal.
Pound 12 needs to be filled first so the contractor can confirm that their grouting has been successful.
Our team then need to re-fill the pounds all the way to lock 1e in a controlled order, so that we can re-open the canal.
Unfortunately due to vandalism of the locks this is proving difficult.
If anybody sees a person who is not working for the Trust tampering with the locks or gearing between 16e and 1e, please let us know as soon as possible, so we can take corrective action.
The next update will be given on 9th September.
