Description

We have had several reports of recent groundings on the Upper Trent near Barton Island. We believe that this is being caused by silt deposits which have been left after the recent floods.

Emergency dredging work is being planned in, but for the time being we are advising customers to proceed with caution.

We will update this notice by the 12th February or as soon as we have further information.

4/11/2024

Due to persistently high river flows, we have not been able to complete the proposed dredging at Barton Island before the Easter weekend. This will now take place in early April and as soon as river conditions allow.

Preliminary investigations indicate that there is at least 1m depth of water across the area affected. Boaters can therefore travel along this section of navigation but are asked to proceed with care.

River levels may fluctuate over the Easter period depending on rainfall. Boaters should take note of current river levels when navigating this section.

We suggest boaters could refer to this river level gauge taking readings from Cranfleet. A general rule of thumb would be to calculate the draft of your boat and add 1 metre. If this total is lower than the level shown on the gauge, passage should be possible.

For example:

Boat draft of 0.5m + 1m = 1.5m. In this scenario, if the gauge shows a river level of >1.5m, there should be sufficient depth for this boat to navigate.

Boat draft of 0.8m + 1m = 1.8m. In this scenario, the gauge would need to show a river level of >1.8m for there to be sufficient depth for this boat to navigate.

We will update this notice by the 12th April or as soon as we have further information.

3/28/2024

Due to the recent floods, the silt deposits that were impeding navigation have been dispersed.

Boaters can now travel along this section of the navigation, but are asked to proceed with care.

We still aim to complete the spot dredging by the end of March and will update this notice by the 29th March or as soon as we have more information.

3/22/2024

An assessment of the silt deposits left following the recent flood events has now taken place and the required work is being planned in by our Dredging Team. We currently aim to complete the dredging by the end of March.

We will update this notice by the 29th March or as soon as we have more information.

2/6/2024

Due to further reports of boats grounding on the Upper Trent near Barton Island, we have made the decision to temporarily close this section of the navigation.

We believe the issue to be caused by silt deposits which have been left after the recent floods.

An assessment of the area is taking place this week, with a plan of dredging to be organised as a matter of urgency.

We will update this notice by the 9th February or as soon as we have more information.
