1/18/2024

Over the Christmas period our contractors ensured that the canal at Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal was monitored thoroughly with no further deterioration to the leak.

Our engineering and design teams are currently in the process of establishing a method of repair to resolve further leakage from the canal to the affected culvert and embankment.

Our specialist grouting contractor will be returning to site week commencing Monday 15 January to start dye testing along the bankside. Once this is completed, we will be able to identify the exact location of the leak that is affecting the navigation. Following this investigation, we will conduct grouting works in the precise leakage area to prevent further damage to the culvert and embankment.

We would like to extend our thank you for our customers continued patience and apologies for any inconvenience this ongoing closure is causing.

A further update will be provided Friday 26 January.

We would like to provide an update on the culvert repair at Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal.

Whilst we were hopeful that navigation could resume tomorrow, Thursday 21 December, our contractors have been unsuccessful in stopping the leakage from the canal to the affected culvert.

Due significant risk posed to the canal integrity and the safety of our customers we have taken the decision to keep navigation closed over the Christmas period between Barrowford Bottom Lock 51 and Foulridge Tunnel East Portal.

Our contractors will be working to ensure the dams, over pumping and water management remain in place and are maintained throughout the Christmas period this will prevent the leakage causing further damage.

We apologise for any inconvenience this ongoing closure is causing our customers and we're pushing forward to complete these works as soon as possible in the new year.

A further update on the progress will be provided by Friday 5 January.

Works are progressing well at Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal, with the culvert successfully relined to prevent any further leakage.

Repairs to the offside washwall where a sink hole had appeared are also complete, and the damaged towpath side washwall is currently being removed. Works to repair and reinstate the towpath side washwall will start next week.

We have also started to remove the build-up of silt from the canal bed and works to line the canal bed with clay are also underway, we anticipate this will be complete in early December.

A further update on progress made will be provided in December, before the Christmas period.

11/29/2023

Works are continuing to progress to the culvert at Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. We have now installed a safe access route down to the outlet of the culvert to allow preparation for the pipe liner to be installed. We had initially planned for the liner to be installed this week however due to the heavy rain and the water flow through the culvert, this has unfortunately been delayed.

Our contractor have now advised they will be re-jetting and cleaning the culvert this week to allow them to complete the installation of the liner which will start Friday and in to the weekend period. Once this in place it will prevent any water ingress from entering the culvert. Next week we will be installing clay to allow us to begin the repairs to the walls on both sides of the canal.

We now have a firm programme of works from our contractor. The repairs at this location are extensive as they include repairs to washwall and the installation of the manhole chamber. The current programme shows works will take up until late January 2024, with navigation resuming, at the earliest, mid-January 2024.

The towpath will remain closed until the works are complete as we will be completing the reinstatement works to the surrounding areas.

A further update will be provided Wednesday 29 November.

11/15/2023

Investigation works have now been completed into the cause of the leakage from the culvert next to Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Last week we have installed safe access from the road down to the site, completed the jetting of the culvert, undertook CCTV surveys, and improved the access to the outlet of the culvert. We have also switched over from diesel to electric pumps with float switches to ensure flows are being maintained either side of the dams.

After reviewing the CCTV surveys, we have decided that a pipe liner for the culvert will be the best solution. This will allow the culvert to be sealed and prevent any water ingress. Our contractors will begin to install this next week. This will involve two days cleaning the culvert and then three days to install the liner. We are hoping to have this completed by Monday 13 November. The next steps will be to rebuild the damaged walls either side of the canal, undertake repairs to the canal bed and then install a new manhole chamber on the offside of the canal.

At this point in time, we envisage these works to take us up to the Christmas period however we will be in a better place to advise once the pipe liner is installed.

A further update will be provided by Wednesday 15 November.

11/1/2023

Investigation works continue in to the cause of the recent leakage from the culvert next to Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal. This week we continue to remove debris from the culvert to allow us to carry out the required detailed surveys.

Whilst the CCTV surveys will provide a more accurate timescale, at this stage, we anticipate works could take 6-8 weeks. The works will include repairs to the canal bed, culvert, washwall and towpath and surrounding areas.

A further update on progress made will be provided by Wednesday 1 November.

10/18/2023

Dams are now in place surrounding the culvert next to Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The fish rescue has taken place, and we are now draining the section between the dams.

Later today we will be removing the silt from the canal bed and any debris from within the culvert to allow us to carry out a CCTV inspection.

Our engineers will then be working with our design team early next week to create a method of repair which will also help us to determine estimated timeframes.

We have removed the padlocks from the Greenberfield Lock Flight for customers to access the customer service facilities only. Please note, this will remain under review as we continue to monitor the surrounding water levels.

A further update on progress made will be provided by Wednesday 18 October.

10/13/2023

During the night, our teams placed temporary sheeting over the hole within the canal next to Bridge 145, Wanless Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal to help maintain the water levels. This was monitored throughout the night and has been successful in preventing further loss of water from the canal.

Our contractors arrived onsite early this morning to install the dams and over pumping system to maintain the water levels in the surrounding area. A fish rescue will be carried out this afternoon which will allow us to dewater the affected section so our engineers can inspect the culvert.

For the safety of our customers and to ensure a safe working environment, navigation is closed between Barrowford Bottom Lock 51 and Greenberfield Bottom Lock 42, this is to reduce fluctuation of the water levels within the summit pound from lock operations. The towpath has also been closed between Bridge 144, Blakey Bridge and the Foulridge Tunnel.

We would like to thank our customers for your continued patience, understanding and co-operation.

A further update will be provided tomorrow, Friday 13 October.
