Description
Due to low water levels in pound 1 we have had to close the navigation between Lock 3 East and Lock 1 East on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
This section has been chained up and is now not in use. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
The navigation will be open as soon as all the pounds recover.
Updates
Since the Standedge Tunnel is now closed for the winter season, there will be limited demand for passage through Lock 1E. Therefore, if you need to arrange passage, please contact the Yorkshire North East customer service team at 03030 404040 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm). Make sure to provide at least 48 hours' notice.
Please note there is a winter stoppage to repair the lock commencing 6th Jan.
11/1/2024To help keep water levels navigable we are using stop planks at Lock 1e. This is a highly labour intensive operation therefore we are having to restrict passage to Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We appreciate your patience with this. The booking system is aimed at helping you arrange an ontime passage in advance of your arrival. Bookings can be made up to a minimum of 48 hours prior to use of the lock. Please be aware you will only be able to go as far as lock 32E without a Standedge Tunnel booking.
Welcome :: Canal & River Trust Licensing (canalrivertrust.org.uk)
9/12/2024We are continuing to investigate water loss in this pound, we are working with our engineers to resolve the issue,
Until we have a solution to help keep water levels navigable we are using stop planks at Lock 1e. This is a highly labour intensive operation therefore we are having to restrict passage to Tuesdays and Thursdays.
5/28/2024Huddersfield Narrow Canal Lock 1 East
Due to fluctuating water levels caused by several factors including the overall design of the canal in the area. It is necessary to limit passage to boaters and for one of our operatives or volunteers to operate the lock for you.
Passage is available to book 11am regardless of direction of travel Monday to Friday.
Bookings can be made up to a minimum of 48 hours prior to use of the lock. Please be aware you will only be able to go as far as lock 32E without a Standedge Tunnel booking.
Customers can book these passages through the Passages/Tunnels section of the 'My Boat Licencing' area of the Canal & River Trust Website, or by calling 03030 404040
We look forward to meeting you on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
3/25/2024We are only be able to provide booked passage on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is due to the manpower needed to remove and reinsert the stop planks before and after passage.
We have updated the booking facility to allow only Tuesday and Thursday bookings through October and November.
10/11/2023Due to the insertion of the stop planks needed at the section of Lock 1e and Lock 3e and the number of operatives needed to remove and reinsert them before and after every passage - we are unable to provide passage on Saturday and Sunday.
We have updated the booking facility to reflect this.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and should any improvements be made, then the notice will be updated.
9/25/2023The low water levels have improved due to the insertion of stop planks.
It will continue to be locked up between Lock 3 east and Lock 1 east is only accessible with the booked passage system.
We can only accommodate bookings of 48 hours notice as stop planks have been inserted to contain the water levels and these need to be removed before and re-inserted after every boat passage, so unfortunately we are unable to be flexible with boat passage bookings. This takes a minimum of 2 members of staff to man the passage and we need the 48 hour notice to ensure that we are able to have the 2 members of the team to undertake this.
The stop planks will be present until November, when we hope to have further works carried out on the lock.
