Description

Please be advised, as a result of Storm Christoph, canal navigation and towpath are closed between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal due to a landslide from the offside embankment.

Our teams are aware and organising further inspections. An update will be provided Monday 25 January.

Updates

Navigation through this area remains one-way. Customers must slow down to a maximum speed of 2mph or tick-over if possible, remain in single file through the restricted channel, with only 1 boat allowed to pass through at any one time.

All customers must adhere to the signage onsite.

This is to maintain the safety of all our customers and to protect the landslip from any deterioration.

2/3/2023

Please be advised third-party contractors working for Cadent will be onsite to carry out necessary vegetation works. They will be attending on the morning of Thursday 13th May to fell two unstable trees adjacent to the land slip.

The works are expected to take around 2 hours and boats may be requested to wait for up to half an hour until it is safe to pass the site.

Please approach with caution and follow any instructions given by our on-site staff.

Works to clear a navigable channel between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal are not yet complete, however testing of a restricted passage through the affected area has proven successful and we are now able to provide some details into the passage requirements.

From 10am, Wednesday 21 April, our teams will be onsite daily to ensure a safe and controlled one-way passage.

Customers must slow down to a maximum speed of 2mph or tick-over if possible, remain in single file through the restricted channel, with only 1 boat allowed to pass through at any one time. Please note, priority will be given to boats heading from the tunnels to Anderton.

All customers must adhere to the safety instructions given by the team and signage onsite.

Please note, visitor moorings either side of the affected area have been suspended to allow boats to moor whilst waiting for passage. This will be signposted onsite.

Whilst works are still ongoing to prepare the site for restricted passage ready for Wednesday, boats must not go through unaided as this may cause further erosion and delay the reopening.

This is to maintain the safety of all our customers and to protect the landslip from any deterioration.

This restricted passage will remain under review and should any changes need to be made, we will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible.

4/16/2021

Our contractors have been working carefully on site to clear a navigable channel between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal and yesterday they removed a significant obstruction to successfully clear a channel. Whilst there is still a considerable amount of work required to install protection to the landslip to prevent further erosion and another closure, we are aiming to test and confirm our operational arrangements for managing a single file, restricted passage through the affected area by the end of this week.

Dependant on the progress of the erosion protection works and if the operational trials are successful we aim to re-open the navigation early in the week commencing Monday 19 April.

We will need our customers patience and support to adhere to some strict navigation requirements such as speed limits past the affected area and we will confirm these with the next update which will be provided on Friday 16 April.

We appreciate the lack of certainty will be frustrating for our customers but adopting this careful approach is to ensure we are providing a safe passage for our customers and once we get the navigation open, to keep it open throughout the summer.

4/14/2021

Starting tomorrow, our contractors will be onsite between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal to undertake works that will help us to explore ways in which we can safely allow boat movement through the affected area without destabilising the embankment, slipped material within the canal or the above gas main.

A further update will be provided by Tuesday 20 April.

4/6/2021

Please be advised navigation and towpath access remains closed between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal whilst our teams continue to explore suitable methods to be able to safely repair the significant slip of material from third party owned land.

Our teams continue to work with the neighbouring landowner and owner of the gas main above whilst carrying out regular monitoring surveys of the slope.

A further update will be provided by Tuesday 6 April.

3/12/2021

Please be advised our teams continue to work together to discuss suitable methods to be able to safely repair the significant slip of material from third party owned land between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal.

We are working with our neighbouring landowner whilst further site meetings and monitoring of the slope continue. For the safety of all our customers, towpath access and canal navigation remain closed.

A further update will be provided by Friday 12 March.

2/26/2021

Our teams continue to work together to form a method of repair to the significant slip of material from third party owned land between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal. For the safety of all our customers, towpath access and canal navigation remain closed.

Contractors have installed a pipe against the towpath wall to help keep the narrow channel clear and we are working to ensure we can continue to manage the water levels through the affected area effectively.

Regular monitoring surveys of the slope continue, however our geotechnical advisers confirm we cannot, at present, remove the material blocking navigation as it risks destabilising the cutting further.

Any further works onsite are now subject to third party assistance and our teams continue to explore the options available to us. A further update will be provided by Friday 26 February.

2/8/2021

Please be advised navigation and towpath access remains closed between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal due to a significant slip of material from third party owned land during Storm Christoph.

Canal navigation has been blocked by fallen soil and vegetation with additional risk to the towpath and gas main above. Our contractors have managed to create a narrow channel to ensure water can feed through the site, however surveys will need to be carried out to assess the current risk which will guide our efforts to remove the remaining material without causing further damage.

Unfortunately, we anticipate the canal and towpath will be closed here for some time and a further update will be provided by Monday 8 February.
