The repairs to the balance beam have been successfully completed and Lock 2 is operational.

The repair work was unfortunately unable to be carried out this week.

To carry out the repairs, we are having to coincide the availability of the workboat with when the contractors can carry out the works. So far the timings, have not coincided. However, we are looking to be able to have the work boat next week and are hoping to have the contractor able to carry out the needed works/repairs on Wednesday to Friday next week. We will update the notice on Monday 7th September, when we will have more information.

We have received the specialist parts required to carry out the repairs to the balance beam mechanism at Lock 2. We are currently only awaiting the use of a suitable workboat to allow the team to safely access the mechanism and carry out the repairs. We are expecting to carry out the works next week. We will provide a further update on the progress of the repairs by Friday 28th August 2026.

We have placed the order for the specialist parts needed and they have been created and we have had them delivered. To carry out the repairs the mechanism to the balance beams, it needs to be accessed by boat and we are having to make arrangements for this to be done. We are hoping that we can obtain the workboat for the Friday 21st August enabling us to access Lock 2 to carry out the repairs. We will update the notice on Friday 21st August with information on the repairs.

Lock 2 on the Huddersfield Broad is currently out of action as part of the mechanism has broken off, causing the balance beam to drop. It is not safe to operate the lock, using the remaining paddles, so the decision has been made to close it.

A specialist contractor is required to manufacture a replacement piece and will be on site to measure up in the coming days. Once the part has been made, a crane boat may be required to fit it.

The closure will remain in place until the lock can be safely operated, once this new part has been fitted. This notice will be updated as soon as we have more information regarding a completion date.
