Updates
We have been made aware that the Environment Agency will be closing Boston Barrier between Monday 2nd June 2025 -- Sunday 15th June 2025 for maintenance work. The details published on the Environment Agency website are as follows: In June 2025 there will be a two-week Boston Barrier closure to allow us to carry out essential maintenance checks to the barrier gate as part of its 5-year maintenance plan. The Boston Barrier is due to be raised into its maintenance position at Monday 2nd June 2025 and is expected to be lowered back into its recess in the river on Sunday 15th June 2025. Throughout this closure period there will be no access through the barrier structure to river traffic in either direction, the matrix signs will display "Barrier Closed" and the red navigation lights will be on for the duration of the works. This closure and associated maintenance works are essential for the continued reliable operation of the barrier to protect Boston from tidal flooding. We understand that this closure may cause some disruption, and whilst the dates and times given above are our anticipated programme, we will endeavour to complete the works and reopen the river to traffic as soon as possible. We will closely monitor the weather, river levels and tidal forecasts in the lead up to and during the proposed closure, and should the need arise we will alter or suspend our programme of work. Whilst we carry out these works the barrier will be placed in its maintenance position which will allow 'normal' river discharge underneath the barrier. This therefore will not affect river levels. However, if we encounter heavy rain fall during these works, then the barrier will be refilled and returned to its open position in its recess on the riverbed as soon as possible. In the case of a surge tide after works have commenced, we will also be able to lower the barrier into its defence position.
