We were hoping for the works to be completed, but there has been a delay and the wall still poses a risk even more so as previously a tree had fallen against it, damaging it further and adding to the already unstable condition that it was in. We do not have a completion date, but we will update the notice to any further information that we receive.
The section of towpath from Lock 4 east, Longroyd Bridge to Bridge 30, Mark Bottom Road Bridge has been closed for some time due to an unstable wall that may pose a risk to towpath users. Works to repair the wall will commence on 19th January 2026 and complete by 31st March 2026. Repairs to the wall will be undertaken from boats moored near to Lock 5 East.
Unfortunately, we are still working hard to find a solution to allow us to repair this retaining wall and reopen the towpath in 2025. However, this has not been the case, so we are hoping that it will reopen in 2026. This repair project is complicated by landownership issues, contamination by asbestos, services within the private land behind the wall and the proximity of the rail line along the top of the embankment. We have explored temporary options to reopen the towpath but due to serious health & safety concerns of a landslip, the towpath will remain closed until further notice. We apologise for the disruption and frustration caused, but public safety is our utmost priority.
