Updates
Work is moving along to plan at Lock 11W and we're making great progress. Tree removal is now complete, and everything was done under the watchful eye of our ecologist to make sure any bats or nesting birds were protected throughout. At the southern slip, we've finished building a working platform in the canal bed and have started installing the new retaining structure, a big step forward in strengthening the embankment. Meanwhile, over by Lock 11W, we've kicked off the enabling works to create a safe crossing over the River Tame. As part of this next stage, we'll soon be lowering the water levels between Lock 11W and Lock 12W so we can carry out work safely. A fish rescue will also take place. We're aiming to complete the embankment repairs by 1 August, and after that we'll be working on putting everything back the way it was – including resurfacing paths and replanting trees where access was needed. The rest of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is still closed due to low water levels. We're keeping a close eye on things, but if the situation doesn't improve in time, it could delay the planned reopening of the lock before 1 August. We'll keep you updated and share any changes as soon as we can. You can find the latest information [here](https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/01968cb8-ce8b-7a52-be40-ae3f2b58ef36). Our next update will be on or before 11 July 2025.
6/6/2025We're continuing to make good progress getting everything in place for the main repair works. The land access agreements are now in place, and work is ongoing to get the site fully ready. This includes installing access routes and clearing debris so our contractors can reach the embankment safely. You'll still see some temporary footpath diversions on the towpath and nearby woodland these are clearly signposted, and we're doing our best to keep disruption to a minimum. Our detailed designs are now complete and have been passed to the contractor, who's working on the final plans to deliver the permanent repairs. As part of this, we'll need to lower the pound between Lock 11 and Scout Tunnel this is planned for later this month. At the moment, we're aiming to reopen navigation between the end of July to mid-August 2025, though this might change slightly as work continues and plans develop on site. Our next update will be on or before 6 June 2025.
5/9/2025Our teams are progressing well into the access works that will help us get everything ready for the main repairs. Getting access to the site hasn't been easy there's a lot to do on both sides of the canal and the River Tame to make sure our contractors can safely reach the embankment. We've completed the early environmental and ecological checks, and our design team is now putting the finishing touches on the detailed plans. These will guide the permanent repair work, which will begin once the site is fully set up. We've also started clearing debris and installing access routes. As work continues, you might notice some temporary footpath diversions we'll make sure these are clearly signposted and cause as little disruption as possible. Our current plan will aim to re-open navigation by 31st July 2025, although that could change a little as things develop due to complexity of the repairs. Our next update will be on or before the 9th May. 5/1/2025Original message issued 1 January 2025: Lock 11 West has suffered some structural damage to the offside banking that neighbours the lock chamber. The damage has been caused by the severe weather. The structural failure means the lock is inoperable and must be closed for the safety of the canal visitors and boaters. Canal and River Trust are currently waiting for the damage to be assessed by the relevant departments. Once assessments have been made, an update will be posted
